This is where the websites and web pages are ranked and organized into the order they will appear in the search results.
Of course the next step happens when a person types in search terms, as you’ve more than likely done many times already in order to find specific information. If you have, then of course you know that once you type in your search and you press the enter key, you end up getting pages and pages of results. This is because the search engine has taken your search terms and compared it to the information stored in the database so that your request can be processed. Interestingly enough, all the different search engines make use of their own process in order to determine which websites and web pages should appear in the search results. As soon as the search engine has finished processing your request, the results are displayed on your screen where you can then choose which web site or web page you wish to view.
Of course all search engines are different due to the fact that they all use different algorithms, and this is why you would be presented with different results from the different search engines even if you typed in the exact same search criteria. This is largely because the different algorithms place emphasis on different factors such as links, meta tags, and keyword density. The results you get will depend largely on which factors are considered to be more important by each of the search engines. Another thing to bear in mind is that the search engines change their algorithms frequently which of course make things even more complicated than they already are.
Of course when you decide to optimize a web page for the search engines, it can be extremely advantageous if you know which algorithms the search engines use.
